Prego Saves the Day with Italian Sauce for Sensitive Bellies

I was strolling through the aisles of Harris Teeter, perusing the sauce labels as usual. Who doesn’t love sauces? Dipping sauces, pasta sauces, marinades, dressings…I swear I could just bathe in sauces sometimes. I know I’m not alone.

For me, the problem with sauces and dressings is that many are full of onion or garlic. Granulated onion, dried onion, onion powder, whatever. It’s everywhere. (The same goes for delicious chips and snacks – Doritos, Sun Chips, etc. But that’s another post for another day). Because onions and garlic are high FODMAP, my belly is sensitive to them, and I need to largely limit or avoid them. I don’t mind checking labels; I do, however, feel bad always having to check with my servers at restaurants because I’m sure it’s a pain for them.

Back to the aisles of Harris Teeter. I was about to grab a jar of Prego Marinara sauce because they have tolerable amounts of dried onion and garlic for me. I read some of the other Prego options: Italian Sausage and Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, No Sugar Added, Chunky Garden Zucchini…then I GASPED when I got to the jars that read SENSITIVE BELLY. I dropped everything to pick up a jar and read “No onions or garlic” in smaller print on the front of the jar. I swear I almost wept in the grocery store. It just seemed too good to be true. Immediately, I put six jars in my cart. I wanted to take them all, but that just felt greedy 🙂 (Some people hoard toilet paper, I hoard gut-friendly pasta sauce).

You might think I’m a lunatic for being ecstatic over six jars of sauce. But for me, this was a really important moment. This moment confirmed for me that there are other people out there who struggle in the same way I do. This moment confirmed that brands are starting to recognize that and accommodate our needs. And I’m not just talking expensive health food brands – this was a big deal because Prego is an affordable pasta sauce that I can pick up at my local grocery store. Huge win for bloated bellies everywhere!

Did I mention this sauce is GLUTEN FREE?! It also has no high fructose corn syrup and is low in saturated fat. Peep some of the nutrition facts below. That green “Fodmap Friendly” label makes my heart skip a beat!

Each 1/2 cup serving of sauce provides 1 cup equivalent of vegetables!
Full ingredient list: Tomato puree (water, tomato paste), diced tomatoes in tomato juice, sugar, canola oil, contains less than 1% of: salt, spices, citric acid

The unfortunate part of the story is that when I went to my Harris Teeter a few weeks later, the sauce was no longer there. Or the next time…or the next time. (Good thing I had six jars, AMIRIGHT?). Lucky for me, Amazon sells this sauce in bulk. You can also see where this product is available in stores using Prego’s website.

If you struggle with gastrointestinal disorders and/or are sensitive to onions and garlic, I can’t recommend this sauce enough. Delicious, affordable, and easy to get your hands on. Prego, you have my heart forever.
